The Black Sea Trust for Regional Cooperation (BST)

The project location is part of the Black Sea region, characterized with many conflicting interests and disputes. In the past the countries were involved with opposing spheres of influence of the great forces. Now it is still an area with a difficult political geography. The democratic process which began in the early 1990-ies has taken various turns. Even though there are two EU member states in the target region, Bulgaria and Romania, and one accession country, Turkey the democratization of the societies needs to make a much bigger progress and governments need to subscribe clearly to democratic values. In Russia civil society, which is under pressure from the authorities, is struggling to involve more citizens in a public democratic process. Ukraine and Georgia, both struggling with various political and economic difficulties, declare political commitment to democratic standards but have a long way to go to achieve them. In all countries public institutions need to be reformed further.
